Chosen female icon and why:
With March being Women’s History Month, each year I’m amazed time and time again on how women have challenged societal standards and break through glass ceilings. Being a woman comes with a lot of expectations and standards. I believe it is freedom that is being fought for in the end. Freedom from the boxes and labels that have been constructed to keep us mediocre in our greatness- still, in order to attain this freedom, there must be recognition. There are so many women that have paved the way that should be recognized; but there is one in particular that I truly resonate with, Frida Khalo. Mexican artist Frida Khalo was born in a time and place where women were traditionally expected to be pretty, stay in the house, and be a good wife to her husband. This incredible woman saw beyond this. She spent her time not only making art, but spreading empowering messages through this medium. She embraced her facial hair in all of her self portraits, showing the world that women shouldn’t have to modify themselves to be considered beautiful. Frida believed in herself despite having suffered 3 miscarriages, severe bone injuries, & heart break. She was able to channel her pain into creation that inspires humans to this day. Frida Khalo truly embodies feminine greatness. Now there is no where to go but up! Happy Women’s History Month! Hug your mom today.
