St. Luke’s goes to Prom!

June 012011

This year, seven high school students and one eighth grader in the St. Luke’s Center were invited to attend 4th Annual YES Prom. To receive an invitation, each student must have a C average or above in every subject. This year for the first time an eighth grader, Dewanna Williams, was also invited because she had made straight As on every report card. Chelsea Nguyen, a 10th grader also maintained an A average in every class this school year.
On Saturday, May 14, the students and staff members first met at the center for pictures. The young men were dressed in tuxedos provided by Street Tuxedo.  Enchanted Limousines provided transportation to the Lucky Bamboo restaurant in a stretch Escalade. At the restaurant, students were served an eight course Chinese feast where they were able to sample foods that some had never tried before. The Asian students attempted to teach the others to eat with chopsticks.  During the feast, both of our graduating seniors, Joe Stone and Roger Boyd, gave advice to their fellow classmates. David Estes, our center director, told the group, “I know that YES has been a better place because Joe Stone and Roger Boyd have been a part of it.” Afterward, the students and staff returned to the center for a few hours of intense volleyball competition.
The YES Prom is a special event commemorating the accomplishments of our high school students and exposing them to new and exciting experiences.  Thank you to local businesses and individuals whose donations made this evening possible.
