Fulbright Scholars visit Y.E.S

March 022010

On Friday, Feb. 26, the Y.E.S. center at St. Luke’s was privileged to host a group of 15 Fulbright Scholars. Fulbright Scholars are international students who have been awarded scholarships to study in the United States. The visiting scholars represented fourteen different countries spanning Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America.  They also represented multiple fields of study including engineering, archaeology, architecture, and political science. When the scholars arrived, they met with a group of high school students to answer questions and discuss the importance of setting and fulfilling educational goals. Various topics were explored and our students and the scholars were able to openly discuss the cultural differences between their home countries and America. Once the middle school and elementary students arrived, the scholars participated in a game where each student was given a fun fact about one of the visiting scholars and had to find the person who matched it. After the game, everyone enjoyed an ice cream sundae bar. The experience exposed our students to various cultures and careers and hopefully awakened a dream within them to travel and possibly even study abroad.
