A GREAT summer at St. Luke’s!

August 162010

The Y.E.S. St. Luke’s center has had an action packed summer! With field trips, enrichment classes, Bible study, community service, and there has not been a dull moment at St. Luke’s. The theme for the summer was “Wild, Wild West”. Students participated in Reading Buddies, and Enrichment Classes that focused on historical characters to lived in the Wild Wild West. The K-3rd graders planted and tended to a Bucket Garden all summer with Second Harvest. The 4th-6th graders participated in Frist Art Trunk Classes. The 7th-12th graders studied Country Music Appreciation, Hands-On Math, and ACT Prep (for our high school students). There were also chapel services focusing on making good choices. They studied various Bible characters who were faced with difficult choices. Six young men decided to become Christians: D.J., Johnny, Tyler, Thomas, Roger and Deondre!

In the midst of the summer heat, 50 students went to camp for a week. Camp is a highly anticipated week each year, and despite temperatures in the 100’s, it was a great week full of Bible study and fun. The theme was “Soul Survivor”. The daily chapels focused on the Parable of the Sower. Each child was challenged to find out what type of soil (as described in the parable) he or she is. The students applied the parable by finding good soil and planting wild flowers at Camp Sycamore at the end of the week. One of the teens, Deondre, was baptized!

As you can see, it has been a busy, but fun summer at Y.E.S. Now as all three centers begin after school programming, we ask you to consider how you can make a difference in the life of a child. No matter your skills or interests, there is always a spot for willing volunteers!
